How a Drum Pump Works

A drum pump mounts on the drum through a 2 inch bung adapter, with a suction tube (typically 1060 mm long) immersed into the liquid. The pumping mechanism draws fluid up the tube and dispenses it through the outlet spout or hose, so the drum never needs to be tilted or tipped.

The mechanism depends on the operation type. In a rotary hand operated drum pump, turning the handle drives the rotary mechanism, delivering up to 1 litre of liquid per rotation. In a motor operated drum pump, an electric motor drives the pump for continuous high speed transfer of up to 100 litres per minute. In a pneumatic drum pump, compressed air (around 0.1 MPa through an 8 mm air hose) powers the pump, producing no electrical sparks, which makes it safe for flammable liquids and hazardous zones.

Types of Drum Pumps

Hand Operated Drum Pump

Hand-operated drum pumps are manual liquid transfer devices that require no external power source. They are ideal for smaller-scale operations, remote sites, or environments where electricity is unavailable. Their simple design makes them easy to maintain and transport.

Key Features:
  • No electricity or compressed air required
  • Lightweight and easy to carry and use
  • Suitable for oil, diesel, petrol, chemicals, acids, and water

Motor-Operated Drum Pump

Motor operated drum pumps are powered by an electric motor and are used for high-speed, continuous fluid transfer from industrial drums. These pumps significantly reduce manual effort and are suited for regular production or filling operations.

Key Features:
  • High flow rates for rapid drum emptying
  • Suitable for light oils, chemicals, and industrial acids
  • Consistent output without operator fatigue

Pneumatic Drum Pump

Pneumatic drum pumps operate on compressed air and produce no electrical sparks, making them the preferred choice for flammable liquids, solvents, and hazardous chemicals. These are used in environments where electrical equipment poses a safety risk.

Key Features:
  • Spark-free air-operated design for safe use in hazardous zones
  • Precise control over flow rate
  • Available in brass and stainless steel 316 construction

Frequently Asked Questions

A drum pump is a portable liquid transfer device designed to insert through the bung opening of a standard industrial drum (typically 200 L or 55 gallons) to safely pump out fluids. Also called a barrel pump, it is used to dispense oils, diesel, chemicals, acids, and other industrial liquids without tilting or tipping the drum.

There is no functional difference. Drum pump and barrel pump refer to the same type of liquid transfer device. The terms are used interchangeably. The choice of term often depends on regional preference, but the equipment and its purpose are identical.

A pneumatic drum pump is recommended for environments where flammable liquids, solvents, or hazardous chemicals are handled. Since it operates on compressed air and produces no electrical sparks, it is safe for use in explosive or hazardous zones. Ambica Machine Tools offers the AMTABP-50 pneumatic drum pump for such applications.

Depending on the model and material of construction, our drum pumps can handle oils, diesel, petrol, kerosene, machine oil, light chemicals, acids, alkalis, solvents, water, and alcohol. Always confirm fluid compatibility with the wetted part materials before finalising pump selection.

Flow rates vary by model. Hand-operated models feature a displacement of 15.7 cc per stroke, enabling accurate and controlled pressure generation for hydrostatic testing applications, depending on the model. Motor-operated models deliver up to 100 LPM. Pneumatic models deliver up to 85 to 94 LPM. Actual flow depends on fluid viscosity, discharge head, and operating conditions.

Our drum pumps are designed for non-viscous and semi-viscous fluids such as oils, diesel, chemicals, acids, and solvents. Heavy viscous materials like grease or thick resin are not suitable for standard drum pump models, as the flow rate drops significantly with increasing viscosity. If you need to transfer higher viscosity liquids, contact our team with your fluid details, and we will recommend the right pump configuration for your application.

Our drum pumps are compatible with 5, 15, 30, and 55-gallon drums. The 2-inch MNPT bung adapter allows secure mounting on standard industrial drum openings. Please confirm drum size and bung configuration from the product specification sheet before purchasing.

Beyond drum pumps, we also manufacture barrel pumps, hydro test pumps, and centrifugal pumps to meet diverse industrial fluid handling needs. You can explore our full product range or contact us directly to find the right pump for your application.
